“We’ll wipe your defaults, guaranteed.” If you have bad credit, that pitch is everywhere — and a version of it called credit washing has regulators and credit bureaus increasingly concerned. This guide explains what credit washing is, why it can leave you worse off than the default did, and how to tell a lawful credit repair process from a scam.
What credit washing actually is
Credit washing is the practice of disputing accurate credit listings using false claims — most commonly a false assertion that the debt arose from identity theft or fraud. The listing sometimes comes off temporarily while the dispute is processed, the customer pays the operator, and then the listing frequently returns once the claim collapses. The customer has paid for nothing — and has now put a false statement on the record.
Why it is genuinely dangerous for you
Falsely claiming fraud or identity theft to a credit reporting body or a creditor is not a loophole; it can amount to making false statements, and it creates a paper trail with your name on it. Beyond the legal exposure, washed listings routinely reappear, creditors flag the file, and genuine future disputes on that file face harder scrutiny. A five-year default is a problem; a fraud allegation you signed off on is a bigger one.

How to spot a credit-washing operation
The warning signs are consistent: guaranteed removal of any default, no questions asked about whether the listing is actually wrong; pressure to sign quickly; instructions to claim identity theft for debts you know are yours; big upfront fees; and no written assessment of your file before promises are made. An honest operator cannot guarantee removal, because removal depends on whether the listing was lawfully made — something no one knows before investigating.
What lawful credit repair looks like
Legitimate credit repair is an evidence process. It starts by obtaining your actual credit files, examines every listing against the legal requirements — the $150 and 60-day thresholds, the written notice requirements, accuracy of amounts and identity, listings made during disputes or hardship arrangements — and only disputes listings where a genuine ground exists. Disputes go through the real channels: correction requests, credit provider complaints, AFCA, the OAIC. And when a listing is accurate and properly made, an honest firm says so. That is exactly how our credit repair service works, and it is why we tell some people we cannot help them.
Questions to ask before paying anyone
Ask what specific ground they see for disputing your listing. Ask what happens if the investigation finds the listing lawful. Ask whether they hold an Australian Credit Licence and AFCA membership. Ask for the fee structure in writing. The answers separate investigators from washers quickly. For a wider comparison of the market, see our honest guide to the best credit repair in Australia.
Is credit washing illegal?
Knowingly making false fraud claims to remove accurate listings can constitute fraud and false statements — serious matters. Even where the operator does the lying, the claims are made about your accounts and in your name.
Can accurate defaults ever be removed?
An accurate, lawfully listed default stays for five years — no lawful process removes it early. But “accurate” is exactly what a proper investigation tests: many listings that look solid fail the notice, amount or process requirements when checked. That check is legitimate; inventing fraud is not.
