Search “how to fix my credit score” and you find two kinds of advice: vague tips that change nothing, and paid promises that no one can honestly keep. This guide is the third kind. It explains how credit scores actually work in Australia, how to read your own file, what genuinely fixes a score — and what no service, including ours, is able to fix.
How credit scores work in Australia
Australia has three credit reporting bodies — Equifax, Experian and illion. Each holds its own file on you, and each calculates its own score on its own scale. The same person routinely has three different numbers, because the three files can hold different information: a default might be listed with one bureau and not another, and different lenders report to, and pull from, different bureaus.
The score is not the thing itself. It is a calculation run over the contents of your file — defaults, court judgements, credit enquiries, repayment history information and your credit accounts. Change what the file says and the score follows. That is why fixing a credit score really means fixing the file: there is no lever marked “score” that anyone can pull directly, whatever an advertisement claims.
Step one: read your own file
You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from each bureau once every three months, and you should get all three. Pulling your own file is an access-seeker request — it leaves no enquiry on your file, and checking your own score does not lower it, no matter how often you look.
Read each file for:
- Listings you do not recognise — defaults or accounts from companies you never dealt with, or debts that are not yours.
- Defaults that break the rules. A default can only be listed for a debt of $150 or more, overdue for at least 60 days, after the creditor has sent the required written notices.
- Enquiries you never made — applications you did not authorise, duplicate enquiries from a single application, or wrong dates.
- Repayment history that does not match reality — late markers against payments you made on time.
- Out-of-date listings. Defaults, judgements and enquiries expire after five years; serious credit infringements after seven; repayment history rolls off after two.
What fixing a credit score actually involves
Everything that legitimately improves a credit file falls into four buckets. There is no fifth.
1. Remove wrongful listings
A listing can only be removed when it is inaccurate, unfair, out of date or listed in breach of the credit reporting rules — no one can lawfully remove a valid listing early. Where grounds exist, the route runs through a correction request to the credit reporting body, a complaint to the credit provider that made the listing, and escalation to the relevant ombudsman — AFCA for financial firms, or the telco and energy ombudsmen for those industries — and, where needed, the privacy regulator. Each step generally runs on a 30-day response window; complex matters take longer. Court judgements have additional routes: in some cases a judgement can be set aside or resolved by consent through the court that made it, with the sealed order then provided to the credit reporting bodies. Our guide to removing a default from your credit file walks the process step by step, and our default removal service page shows how we run it.
2. Correct your repayment history
Repayment history information — RHI — covers the past two years of monthly markers on each credit account. It is corrected, not removed: wrong late markers are amended to show what actually happened. Corrected RHI, plus a clean run of on-time payments from here, changes how the recent, heavily read part of your file looks — the two years lenders check first.
3. Stop new damage
Pay everything on time from today. Stop making credit applications — every enquiry stays on your file for five years, and clusters of them read as risk to many scoring models. Be careful with buy now, pay later churn, since many BNPL providers now take part in credit reporting. The fastest way to waste a successful correction is to stack fresh damage on top of it.
4. Let time run
Every negative listing has an expiry date, and recent conduct tends to weigh more with many scoring models than old history. Part of fixing a score is patience: the file you have two years from now is largely built from what you do between now and then.
Think a listing on your file could be challenged?

What no one can fix — and the credit washing trap
Valid listings, correctly made, stay for their full term no matter who you pay. Bankruptcies and Part 9 debt agreements are recorded on the National Personal Insolvency Index and are not removable by anyone. Any service that guarantees removals, promises a specific score, or claims it can delete valid defaults is describing something the law does not allow.
There is also a practice worth naming: credit washing. It means lodging fabricated disputes — false identity-theft claims are the common version — to pressure listings off a file. It is dishonest, it can amount to giving false information to credit providers and credit reporting bodies, and it exposes you to real risk. A legitimate dispute is built on evidence: real documents, real dates, real breaches of the rules. That is the only kind worth running, and the only kind we run.
DIY or professional help?
The honest answer first: you can do this yourself. The law gives you the right to dispute listings directly with the credit reporting bodies and credit providers at no charge, and each bureau has a correction process for exactly this purpose.
What a specialist adds is the machinery. We work with the Privacy Act 1988 and the Credit Reporting Code every day: which ground fits which listing, which avenue to use first, how to escalate when a creditor brushes a complaint aside, and how to verify against a fresh copy of your file that a removal actually happened. Where a dispute has grounds, we pursue it to the end of the ladder rather than stopping at the first “no”. Credit Clean Australia is not a lender, not a broker and not a law firm — our work is the credit file itself, through our fix my credit service.
Book your credit file assessment — for $39.95, we review your credit file and tell you exactly what can be challenged, what can be corrected, and what is valid and staying. You decide what to do with that information.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to fix a credit score?
It depends entirely on what is wrong with the file. Corrections and complaints generally run on 30-day response windows, and complex matters — ombudsman escalations, court judgements — take longer. Anyone quoting a fixed timeframe, or promising a particular score by a particular date, is guessing at best.
Does checking my credit score lower it?
No. Your own report is an access-seeker request and leaves no enquiry on your file. Reading all three files on the free three-monthly cycle is the single best no-cost step in this entire process.
Why is my score different with each bureau?
Because each bureau holds its own file and runs its own calculation on its own scale. Lenders report to different bureaus, so the underlying information differs — which is also why a wrongful listing has to be checked on all three files, not just the one where you first saw it.
Where should I start if I need finance soon?
Read your file before you apply, never after a decline — every application adds a five-year enquiry. If a loan is the goal, our guides to improving your credit score before a home loan and getting a car loan with defaults cover the decision from the lender’s side of the desk.
Or start with the file itself. Book your credit file assessment — $39.95, and you leave knowing exactly where your credit file stands and what, if anything, can be done about it.
Start with the facts about your own file
A $39.95 credit file assessment shows you every default, judgement and enquiry on your Equifax and Experian files — and which ones may be open to challenge.
